Hart Adventure Racing Team (formerly Team HSEC) started in 2019 with three long time endurance athletes and professional coaches in the field of exercise and sport science who learned the sport of adventure racing as we went. One minute we knew exactly what we were doing, the next minute we would be lost (excuse me, temporarily "off course").
What we initially lacked in experience, we made up for in enthusiasm, years of experience in exercise science...and garages full of both necessary and probably unnecessary adventure gear.
Over the years as our adventure racing resume grew, we have slowly expanded our team roster as well (the more the merrier, right?).
Today, the majority of our annual racing calendars consist of adventure races, while our poor ultrasignup profiles sit collecting dust for the time being.
Whether climbing trees, complaining up hills, or trying to not become the next meal for a massive alligator, we're always looking to improve and learn more, always reminding Geoff his right from his left, and always, ultimately, having an awesome time getting lost on purpose.

When asked why Geoff enjoys adventure racing, he said:
"I like nature."

"I like DOING stuff in nature. I also really like all of the gear."

Heather Hart is a long time endurance athlete and lover of getting lost on the trails.
Heather discovered a passion for running after the birth of her oldest son in 2006. In typical endurance athlete fashion, the distance of the races Heather pursued got longer and longer. In 2012, Heather stepped off road and into the sport of Obstacle Course Racing for a while, before settling into the sport that sets her soul on fire: ultrarunning. If given the chance, Heather would pick running 100 miles over racing a 5K any day of the week.
After meeting, falling in love, and marrying Geoff, it took him only another 3 years to convince Heather -a very reluctant cyclist - to give adventure racing a try. Their first race together was the 2019 Independent Republic 3 Hour Adventure Race. Heather's competitive spirit took hold, and they raced hard, securing the overall win.
While Heather still has mixed feelings about mountain biking, her love for adventure racing grows each time she correctly navigates her team to the next CP.

Brian has been an athlete his whole life, starting with team sports and eventually progressing to distance running and triathlon. It wasn’t until he discovered a love for strength training that Brian developed a desire to teach and coach, and help others experience the same passion for health and fitness.
Brian has completed numerous road and off road triathlons, including two 70.3 distance races and countless road races from 5K’s to full marathons. But over time Brian realized that his true passion lies in the dirt, and being outside immersed in nature. Since hitting the trails he has completed multiple 50K Ultra races, timed events ranging from 8 to 12 hours.
But, according to Brian, he got "sick of running so much", so Heather and Geoff didn't have to try terribly hard to convince him to give adventure racing a try.
Brian joined Heather and Geoff for his first AR, the 2021 Palmetto Swamp Fox 12 Hour race. Already a great friend, Brian fit in perfectly with Team HSEC, and acts as a voice of reason for the team, diffusing marital spats fueled by caloric deficits between Heather and Geoff, and acting as the tie breaker vote when necessary.
Greg Majewski - The New Guy
In 2022, Brian suggested that we add his life long best friend, Greg, to our adventure racing team. On a group paddle that May, the four of us came across what appeared to be a 10 foot alligator floating belly up on the shoreline. Seeing as Greg was the new guy, the duty to confirm that a) it was a real alligator, and b) it was a dead alligator, fell upon him.
Despite the pungent smell, and the very real risk that the 10 foot apex predator was simply taking a nap, Greg charged forward up the narrow blackwater creek.
In doing so, he proved his mettle and earned a place on team HSEC through this inadvertent initiation ritual.
Since then, Greg has joined Heather, Geoff, and Brian on endless training adventures. What Greg lacks in adventure racing experience he makes up with an eagerness to learn, and a willingness to "embrace the suck".
Morgan Cheatham - Team Cheerleader & All-Around-Badass
Dr. Morgan Cheatham is a Hospitalist, mom of three, wife, and badass adventure racer based out of Richmond, Virgina.
In early 2021, Morgan contacted Geoff looking for help training for ultramarathons and triathlons. Early into their coach/client relationship, Morgan asked Geoff if he'd ever heard of this thing called "adventure racing"...
...and the rest is history.
Morgan has had a wildly successful adventure racing career in a very short time, finding herself on top of podiums while racing both as a solo athlete and with her regular teammate, Zach Dillon.
In early 2023, we asked Morgan to tag along with us on the Palmetto Swamp Fox Adventure Race, and knew IMMEDIATELY that she was a perfect fit for our team. Her enthusiasm and positive attitude is contagious. From singing karaoke in the middle of a canoe in a pouring rainstorm, to cracking jokes in order to keep her team smiling during low points.
Morgan is a relentless athlete who will tackle any challenge you put in front of her, even when her beloved M&M's melt in her pocket.
And to round out her badassery, Morgan's navigational skills and critical thinking are unwavering, making her an incredible asset to the team.
We are honored to not only call Morgan a teammate, but a friend, and cannot wait to reach more finish lines with her in the future!
